What is an Immigration Psychological Evaluation?
A psychological evaluation for immigration purposes is an assessment that is used to help the courts determine whether you will be able to remain in the United States lawfully. The immigration evaluation process will determine whether you have specific psychological factors that pertain to your case. During an immigration evaluation, you may be assessed for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Anxiety, Depression, Domestic Violence, Academic Performance, Behavior Difficulties, Attention Deficit, Activities of Daily Living, Personality, and other related health factors. It is also important to let your evaluator know if a family member with special needs depends on you. If the family member will suffer extreme hardship if you are returned to your country of origin, their information may help your case as well.

Asylum, VAWA, U & T visas: These types of evaluations are all based on a past traumatic experience. In these, you are evaluating the client to determine the trauma’s effect on them.
What do immigration evaluation consist of:
Clients will meet 1-3 times with a therapist, but this varies depending on the type of case, age of the client, and timeline. The therapist will asks about the client’s background, daily life, mental health, and other relevant factors.
Evaluations consist of an extensive clinical interview followed by the administration of norm-referenced assessments that are empirically validated. The combination of a clinical interview by a skilled and experienced clinician and the use of psychological assessments are the gold standard in the field provide clients with the best opportunity for a successful appeal.
Assessments help to build a strong case for an exemption. At times, interviews with family members may also be conducted in order to highlight the severity of the hardship that a deportation will incur upon a family.
